Installed in the lobby of Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club in Kāʻanapali, Maui.

Kāʻanapali means “divided hill,” and this artwork draws from both the physical contours and the layered histories of this remarkable place. Its overall form abstracts the West Maui Mountains as they rise from the sea, while the segmented peaks suggest the sails of fishing canoes that once set out from the ancient village of Kekaʻa. The base references the black lava of Puʻu Kekaʻa (Black Rock), long regarded as a sacred place where souls were believed to leap from the physical world into the spiritual realm.
